Screws are part of the fastener family and generally consist of three components: the head, chamfer, and shaft. These crucial parts are utilised in a variety of applications, with a nut being used in conjunction with a bolt to secure objects in place. Due to their comparable qualities and the difficulty in differentiating between them, screws are sometimes used interchangeably. Simply put, screws fit into the material, whereas bolts are used to hold materials together by passing the bolt through them.
Stainless steel and other corrosion-resistant materials are frequently used to make screws. On occasion, though, materials like titanium, brass, and zinc are also employed. There are many various types of screws that are readily available, each with a specific use. Common types of screws include wood screws, machine screws, self-tapping screws, sheet metal screws, and drywall screws. Each type serves specific purposes in various applications, depending on factors like material, load-bearing capacity, and thread design.
While carriage screws fasten wood and metal, anchor screws are used in structural applications. Self-tapping screws are widely used in applications where they create their own thread as they’re driven into a material, making them suitable for various materials including metal, plastic, and wood. Wood screws are specifically designed for use in wood and have coarse threads to grip securely. Sheet metal screws are meant for attaching metal sheets or panels, with a sharp, pointed tip for easy penetration. Drywall screws have fine threads and are specially designed for fastening drywall to wood or metal studs. Each type of screw serves a specific purpose and is chosen based on the material and application at hand.
A shoulder and a non-threaded section are the distinguishing features of shoulder bolts and screws. Installation can be carried out manually or normally requires the use of an Allen or socket driver. Hex cap screws and square head bolts are quite similar; the key distinction is the four-sided head of the square head bolt, which makes it easier to grip.
